Safety & Legal Use

Everything {site.name} sells is food-grade nitrous oxide (N₂O) supplied strictly for culinary use — whipping cream, foams, espumas, rapid infusions and similar food and drink preparation. It is not sold, and must never be used, for inhalation.

The law in the UK

Nitrous oxide has legitimate and widespread uses in catering, medicine and industry, and it remains legal to buy and sell for those purposes.

In November 2023 nitrous oxide was classified as a Class C controlled substance under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971. The offence is targeted at psychoactive use: it is unlawful to possess nitrous oxide where you intend to inhale it for its psychoactive effects, or to supply it to someone else knowing or suspecting they will do so.

Legitimate culinary, catering, medical and industrial use is expressly excepted. Buying our products for use in a kitchen or bar is lawful. Buying them to inhale is not, and carries penalties including an unlimited fine and up to 2 years' imprisonment for possession, or up to 14 years for supply.

Why inhaling it is dangerous

Beyond the legal position, the physical risks are real and well documented:

• Oxygen displacement. N₂O displaces oxygen in the lungs. Inhaling it directly can cause hypoxia, unconsciousness and death.
• Nerve damage. Repeated exposure inactivates vitamin B12, causing peripheral nerve damage — numbness, weakness and, in serious cases, irreversible spinal cord degeneration.
• Cold injury. Gas leaving a cylinder is extremely cold and can cause frostbite to skin, lips and airways.
• Pressure injury. Discharging a cylinder directly into the mouth can rupture lung tissue.

If someone becomes unwell after inhaling nitrous oxide, call 999 immediately and tell the operator what was inhaled.

Safe storage

• Store cylinders upright, in a dry, well-ventilated place.
• Keep below 50°C. Never store in direct sunlight, near ovens, hobs, radiators or in a hot vehicle.
• Keep away from open flame, sparks and sources of ignition.
• Store out of reach of children and away from public access.
• Do not store in a cellar, stairwell or fire escape route.
• Keep the safety cap in place until the cylinder is in use.

Safe handling and use

• Read the manufacturer's instructions for both your cylinder and your dispenser before first use.
• Use a compatible pressure regulator with large cylinders. Never improvise a connection.
• Check threads and seals are clean and undamaged before connecting.
• Never point a dispenser or cylinder outlet at a person.
• Wear appropriate protection when charging — the outlet gets very cold.
• Do not over-charge a siphon beyond its rated number of charges.
• Never drop, dent, heat, drill, crush or incinerate a cylinder — including an empty one.
• Ensure good ventilation in the area where you are charging.

Never use a damaged cylinder

Do not use a cylinder that is dented, corroded, bulging, leaking, has a damaged thread, or has been exposed to fire or extreme heat. Isolate it, move it to a ventilated place away from people and heat, and contact us. If a cylinder is leaking and cannot be made safe, evacuate the area, ventilate it and call the emergency services.

Disposal

Empty cylinders are recyclable steel or aluminium, but most kerbside collections will not accept pressurised containers. Take them to a household waste recycling centre and declare them as empty gas canisters, or ask us about trade collection if you hold a pallet account.

Never place a cylinder in general waste, never crush one, and never put one in a fire.

Who we will not sell to

We refuse and cancel orders where:

• The buyer is, or appears to be, under 18;
• The intended use is unclear, or appears to be for inhalation;
• The delivery address or ordering pattern suggests onward supply for misuse;
• We are asked to omit or falsify documentation.
